If you run heavy goods vehicles or trailers, every one of them needs an annual test. For most operators, that test now takes place at an Authorised Testing Facility, or ATF. Here's what that means and why it matters for your fleet.
What is an ATF?
An ATF is a privately owned site that has been approved by the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) to host annual tests for heavy vehicles. The site provides the test lanes and equipment; the test itself is carried out by a DVSA examiner, to exactly the same standard as at a DVSA-run test station.
CFM operates a two-lane ATF at our site in Keighley, with testing five days a week.
Which vehicles need an annual test?
Goods vehicles over 3,500kg and trailers over 3,500kg need an annual test. The first test is due one year after a vehicle is first registered — or, for a trailer, one year after it is first sold or supplied — and every year after that.
Why test at an ATF with a workshop on site?
- Less time off the road. Testing locally means no long trips to a distant test centre.
- Preparation and repairs in one place. Vehicles can be inspected and any defects put right in the workshop before the test, and anything found on the day can be dealt with straight away.
- Test presentation. We can put your vehicle through its test for you, so your driver isn't tied up for the day.
More than just the annual test
Our ATF lanes are also used for voluntary brake tests, headlamp aim checks and adjustment and emissions tests throughout the year. We have a loaded trailer and a loading facility, so vehicles can be brake tested laden — which gives a much more accurate picture of real-world braking performance.
Booking a test
To book an annual test on one of our lanes, call the workshop or send us an enquiry with the vehicle registration and your preferred dates. If you'd like us to prepare the vehicle beforehand, just say so when you book.
